French kids learn German to understand the lyrics, the band is nominated for two MTV-Awards. Tokio Hotel is an established band - and they deserve it.

There is one song by the american band Cypress Hill describing the life of a rockstar: "Rock Superstars" is about a boy dreaming of starting a huge career. The song tells us about the problems, the evil record companies, the crazy fans. It ends in a message to the young musician: "give em a year, he'll be right out the game the same as the last one who came before him gained fame, started gettin ignored"
The band members of Tokio Hotel surely know about this song - and still, the lyrics can only make them smile. In July, 2005 their first single, "Durch den Monsoon" was out in the stores - and went straight to number one in the German and Austrian charts. Over two years later, the song is still in the charts - now, it's in the Portuguese, French and Italian charts. One single can last long after all.
Calling Tokio Hotel a phenomena would not do justice to the band. Especially not now that they have two nominations for the MTV Europe Music Awards. Now, one nomination is normally assured if you consider that every country gets to send five candidates out to become best national act. The other categories like best band and interact are worth a lot more - and these are the ones Tokio Hotel is nominated for.

Having one look at the other nominees is enough to realize what the prize is worth. Bill Kaulitz and his colleagues are up against My Chemical Romance, Fall out Boy, Depeche Mode and Linkin Park. Tokio Hotel gets to be right next to international top acts while other German bands like Juli and Sportfreunde Stiller have to fight against each other for best national act.
What is the reason that this band causes an international hype - and let's just ignore the not-so-successful attempt to conquer Britain. French teachers say that the German classes are crowded with students because the pupils try to understand the lyrics of Tokio Hotel. The Goethe-Institute calls the band an unexpected but perfect happening and plans accompanying measures: "We are integrating the phenomena of Tokio Hotel into our teaching plans," says Günter Kipfmüller, Head of the area for languages of the Goethe Institute in Paris.
No more a surprise. More than ever is it needed to look at a pop star as a mix of music and image. The scandals of Britney Spears cause magazines to start own resorts for her. Robbie Williams doesn't only sell himself as a songwriter but as the last real pop star who also takes apart a hotel room once in a while. And so do Tokio Hotel: Bill Kaulitz, the lead singer, is one of the most charismatic characters in the music world. Not only because his eyeliner but also because of his rock star attitude during interviews and concerts. He is different from all the other German singers, who play the "actually I am the girl/boy next door" card. The more average Gustav and Georg don't need to be that much of a star - the brothers Kaulitz are enough. One single band could not take more than them.
Ten days from now, the band will be in Munich and wait whether they will win an award or not. If they should really win, they will show themselves surprised - even though they don't have to. They know that they are among the biggest stars in the music world. Not only in Germany but all over Europe.
